30 day challenge

Dragon Line ‘Son of Prophecy’

New 30 Day Challenge – July 2013

Okay, so I’ve completed my first 30 day challenge which was writing at least 500 words a day (you can read about my success with this by clicking here.)

So now it’s a new month, so new challenge!

Here’s what I’m planning to do. I’m aiming to find a literary agent for my novel, ‘Dragon Line – Son of Prophecy‘.

Don’t get me wrong on this one – I’m not planning to actually find a literary agent in a month (although that would be really brilliant if that did happen!) Instead, I’m going to measure success in terms of actually spending a fixed amount of time on this goal. Just to be sure, here’s my specific SMART target (you can find out all about SMART goals on ‘Success Psychology’ by clicking here):

S – Specific: To progress my search for a literary agent to promote my novel ‘Dragon Line – Son of Prophecy’;

M – Measurable: To spend an hour per day on this task;

A – Achievable: I will have achieved this task if, by the end of the timescale, I have managed to spend on average of an hour per day on working towards the goal;

R – Realistic: An hour per day is affordable time to be spent focussing on this task;

T – Timely: I will set myself 30 days to complete this challenge.

I’ve already taken my first steps towards this task by planning my actions for this goal over the next thirty days. Here’s my plan of action (based on an exercise created by Jurgen Wolff):

 Find literary agent

Identify potential agents and short list Write/review query letter Review and rewrite synopsis Review first three SOP chapters for submission Review and tidy all remaining SOP chapters Send letters and emails as appropriate to agents Review progress and act on any feedback

Although the above plan does follow a logical sequence, some of the tasks might be concurrent. To be honest, there is potentially a lot that could be done in an hour (however – let’s face it! – time does go quite quick, of course!)

Here’s how I’ve got on thus far:

DATE                     PROGRESS

01/07/2013         Created plan of action and reviewed current progress towards the overall goal

02/07/2013           Reviewed existing searches and made lists of possible agent contacts

Okay, so that’s a good start overall. Still a long way to go, however!

So, there we have it – my 30 day challenge. Not much more to say at the moment. As before, I will be reporting on my progress at regular intervals along the way, as in a mid and final review.

In the meantime, if you are reading this and would like to leave any comments, observations or feedback on my challenge, feel free to add a comment in the box below. Of course, you may have been inspired to do a 30 day challenge yourself. If so, I’d love to hear how you are getting on and what things you’ve learnt as a result of your endeavours. Any comments are always thoroughly appreciated!

Look forward to seeing you in the midway review post.
